Quake is a first-person shooter by id Software from 1996 and the first game in the Quake series. In it, players must find a way through various maze and fortress-like environments. In doing so, they have to fight against a variety of monsters, for which they have an extensive arsenal of weapons at their disposal. As the successor to Id's Doom series, Quake is in many ways based on the technology and gameplay of its predecessor. Unlike the Doom engine, however, the Quake engine offered full real-time 3D rendering and support for 3D acceleration through OpenGL. After Doom had already been instrumental in increasing the popularity of multiplayer deathmatches at the time, Quake featured a number of new multiplayer options. Online multiplayer matches became increasingly popular, while the QuakeWorld update and software like QuakeSpy made searching and finding online opponents much easier and more reliable. In addition, various multiplayer mods were developed, such as Team Fortress and Capture the Flag.
